Touring Dual Sunroof

Cost: $10

Difficulty:

Touring Sunroofs are very complicated. They tend to fail and cost a lot of money to replace. If you do not want your sunroof to fail, grease it up and use it, use it, USE IT. If you do not use it, it will fail.

HOW THE DUAL SUNROOF WORKS

This is how my 95 525iT sunroof works...to fully open either the front or rear panel requires 2 (taps) steps:

OPEN FRONT PANEL (see pic below)

1. push switch reward and the rear of the front panel rises (similar to the "vent" position in single panel sunroof) and it assumes the position for the panel to move.

2. another "quick-tap" rearward will move the front panel (half-way) back then it automatically stops...I can quick-tap reward again and the front panel will move back almost completely over the rear panel. Another alternative is to push & hold the switch and it will stop where you want it to.

OPEN REAR PANEL (see pic below)

1. push switch forward and the rear of the front panel rises (similar to the "vent" position in single panel sunroof) and it assumes the position for the panel to move.

2. another "quick-tap" forward will move the rear panel half-way forward the it automatically stops...I can quick-tap forward again and the rear panel will move forward almost completely under the front panel. If I push & hold the switch...it will stop where ever I desire.

Note: some of the early Tourings are reported to NOT have the intermediate stop, going from vent to full open with one tap.

OPEN BOTH PANELS (see pic below)

1. once either panel is opened fully...one "quick-tap" (forward or rearward depending on position of panels) will move the panels to be centrically opened...or you can push & hold the switch to stop where you desire.

TO CLOSE (this is my favorite to watch..definitely a "guy" thing!)

1. one quick-tap upward on the switch will send the panels into an auto-close "dance"...with the rear panel always being the first to move rearward to be closed...then the front panel moves forward then the rear of the front panel dips back down for the final "KA-THuNK". Trully a beautiful dance to watch.

SUNROOF RESET
If you disconnected your battery, you need to reset your dual sunroof on your E34. What you need to do is to push the sunroof switch upward for 10 seconds. You'll hear the front and rear motors cycle and sync back up, and then the sunroof will be operational once more.

HOW TO REMOVE THE SUNROOF PANELS

Taking them in and out are easy once you know where to unhook them and get them back in again. There is only two tabs/clips in front of the fron panel that holds the sunroof in, you need to open the front sunroof up completely to remove it, put in a screwdriver where the clip is going at the tab and just press it down on both sides while you slide the whole cover forwards, then it's just a matter of simply bending it out the top of the roof, it's very flexible so - no worries!

The rear roof is even easier imho. Two tabs on each side, front of it. press them down at the same time while moving it a little forward and then just simply slide it to the right of the car and it will come down by the left side and in your hands.

To put them back in is nothing more complicated than to just aim the tabs of the rear panel back in while doing the reverse of removal, can be a little tricky, but once you got it, next time will be taking you a minute to remove and put it back togheter again if you're in a hurry hehe..

Don't even need to mention how to put the front back in, as it's too easy, it just slides and then clicks into place on the tabs, no need to really allign anything, but all those sliding pieces on each side when you put it back togheter, but that's obvious.
